SPECIAL 26 REVIEW BY SAMEER VALECHA:

Bajpayee, Jimmy Sheirgill, Kajal Aggarwal, Divya Dutta, Rajesh Sharma,Tiku
Talsania, Deepraj Rana, Neeru Bajwa and Neetu Singh
Director: Neeraj Pandey

Bhatia (A Friday Filmworks) and Wide Frame (Kumar Mangat Pathak)

Genre: Crime-Thriller
Censor Details: U/A (Hindi)
Synopsis: SPECIAL 26 brings to the big screen
the scandalous and outrageous incidents that occurred in the 1980s. The film
narrates the story of a group of con men who orchestrated and executed a series
of robberies, targeting the rich and famous, business magnets and politicians
by posing as CBI or IT officers, under the pretext of confiscating unaccounted
wealth [black money] from their premises.
Script Analysis: Neeraj Pandey, who surprised
us all with ‘A Wednesday’ a few years back has arrived once again to the party
with a great story to tell. The story is set in the 1980’s and the plot is very
interesting with a few interesting chases seeming like the Tom and Jerry as was
mentioned by Akshay in an interview.
Screenplay is perfectly fine but a few
minutes after the interval are boring where the romantic angle is showcases. It
was unwanted and could have been easily done away with. Dialogues are a
‘Highlight’ for this film. Cheers to Neeraj Pandey for handling the film well.
Direction and Music: Neeraj Pandey, also the
writer of the film is a good filmmaker and no one can deny that. Even here he
has made an overall good product but his excellence lies in thrillers. The
romantic portion was unwanted and Pandey does not handle it well enough but his
thriller portion manages to sideline the other thing.
Music by Himesh and MM Kareen is just about
all right. My picks from the album would be Dharpakad and Mujh Mein Tu (in
Akshay Kumar’s voice).
Star Performances: Akshay Kumar who plays the
role of a Fake CBI officer, here re-discovers himself as an actor. This has been
his one of the most challenging roles and the most sought after in recent times
after Patiala House. His voice does the magic for him here. Anupam Kher was
equally good as Akshay and as always delivers a splendid performance. Kajal
Aggarwal should have a forgettable experience with this film. Her role was
unwanted and it was there just because a big film should have an actress.
It’s my immense pleasure to watch Manoj
Bajpayee act on-screen in the recent years. He has done quiet a few remarkable
roles like GoW, Chittagong, Raajneeti and Chakravyuh. This one adds to the
league of those films. Jimmy Sheirgill was another talent to watch. ‘A
Wednesday’ brought him back as a talented actor and since then there is no
looking back. Rajesh Sharma and Divya Dutta provided good support in their
roles. Also it was a pleasure to watch Tiku Talsania on-screen after a long
long time. Neeru Bajwa’s dance number was good.
Final Say: Special 26 is an intelligent film
and its strong storyline adds as strength backed by equally powerful
performances. In other words, its a captivating con-movie with an equally
thrilling chase with Akshay Kumar and Manoj Bajpai doing their best chor-police
jodi.
