Synopsis: Jolly [Arshad Warsi], a Meerut-based lawyer who is unsuccessful there, decides to go to Delhi in search of a case that would make him affluent and celebrated instantaneously. As luck would have it, Jolly gets involved in a case that pitches him against a mighty opponent, the hugely successful and unbeatable lawyer Tejpal [Boman Irani]. Also there is a sidetrack that showcases Jolly’s romantic angle with his girlfriend Sandhya [Amrita Rao].
Script Analysis: Firstly let me clarify that Jolly LLB is not a comedy film. It’s a film, which elements of drama, seriousness and a few superb comic situations, which can make anyone, laugh. The Director Subhash Kapoor himself has entirely done Story, Screenplay and Dialogues. Firstly, talking about the story it is predictable but one of those rare ones which is set entirely in the courtrooms of Delhi and yet manages to make you laugh and side by side depicting effective dramatic portions.
Screenplay is all right but dragged in a few portions. But it makes up overall. Dialogues again by Subhash Kapoor are fantastic. Some of the one-liners and punches have become very famous among the public.
Direction and Music: Subhash Kapoor, who earlier made ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’ has made yet another film in the same genre i.e. the highlights of reality. Earlier it was on recession and now it’s the reality of Indian courtrooms. Kapoor knows how to go about his job and he has done it with ease. Maybe, its because he has been a journalist himself covering various court cases so he knows exactly what happens there.
Speaking about music, Krsna gave hits like Tanu Weds Manu and even here the music may not match that level, but it goes well with the screenplay. Tracks like Daaru Pee Ke, Jhooth Boliya and Chalo Sanam fit well into the film.
Star Performances: Arshad Warsi is top-notch and seems like the role was tailor made for an actor like Arshad. He fits well into the character of Jolly. Boman Irani was magnificent. His character has arrogance, over-confidence and shades of being a senior lawyer and he performs with ease. Saurabh Shukla is another with fine talent. This role justifies his talent as the judge. They are the principle characters that carry the film on their shoulders.
Amrita Rao seen after 2 long years in a film has done just about an okay job. She wasn’t convincing in the beginning but soon she got into her own and delivered an average performance. The film has a great supporting cast and it delivers a great support. All the actors like Mohan Kapoor, Vibha Chibbar, Mohan Agashe and Sanjay Mishra were efficient.
Overall: Jolly LLB is a film, which depicts the reality of Indian courtrooms unlike no other Hindi film. It is a very effective dramatically made film, which side by side has its comic moments. It’s a good film to watch.
